Start of the Flat

Well, it looks as if we're heading into another week of lovely weather, which all the animals are loving. This is great - particularly as the end of the week sees 'The Start of the Flat', which of course is far from the big event which it used to be in the pre-AW days. It also means the end of the winter season, which comes at 8.50 on Friday evening and means that whichever of Joe Fanning and Luke Morris who ends up winning the winter premiership will do so with the minimum of fanfare. Which is rather sad because whichever of them does win will deserve better. Would it not be sensible to have the winter premierships end at close of play of the last Saturday of the winter season (ie yesterday, Winter Derby Day) and have the new season commence at the start of the week in which grass racing resumes? That would at least mean that the winter season's high achievers could have their achievements recognised, just supposing someone wanted to recognise them. Having the season end at 8.50 on a Friday night more or less guarantees the under-exposure of winter racing. Although maybe that's what people want. Who knows? It's just that as we've gone all out to create rather forced climaxes to the Flat and National Hunt season, it seems rather a pity that the winter season - which, after all, has been turned into a proper season, because its five and a half months' worth of results don't feature in the Flat season's tables - should be thus ignored. Anyway, that's by the by: let's look forward to this week's Start of the Flat, which we ought to celebrate with a runner, Karma Chameleon (at Kempton, on the all-weather!). Roll on spring.

Good idea about the AW title John. Too sensible?
It is an exciting time and may I wish you and the team all the best for a successful season ahead.

Thank you, Alan.

Interesting to read in Racing Post (5th April) of others holding view that current format of Flat seasons isn't working.

By the way, do we know who did win the Winter Championship?
